Myths About Interior Designers

I have a love/hate relationship with HGTV. Is it on in my house almost daily? Yes. Do I openly roll my eyes at the TV when watching it? Absolutely. We all know television isn't real. So why do we think differently when it comes to home improvement shows? Thanks to channels like these and the glorified six second videos we see on social media, there are many misconceptions about interior design. Let's bust some of these myths shall we?

Myth:

Designers push their own taste and style onto their clients.

Truth:

Every designer has their style. That doesn't mean we don't design into your taste and preferences. It’s also our job to give you that extra boost of confidence so that your home can feel unique to you, and only you.

My Thoughts:

Every designer has developed their own brand but a good designer will be able to steer the design to fit your taste as well. When working with an interior designer, it's important to find one that's the right fit for you. Look a their portfolio, website, bios. Schedule a call to get to know them. We want to get to know you too!

Myth:

Hiring a designer is just an unnecessary added expense.

Truth:

Actually, hiring a designer will save you time (and time is money) and money from costly mistakes.

My Thoughts:

Let's say it again for the people in the back - your time = money. Renovations, new builds, decorating are thoughtful project that take lots of time. There are countless decisions to be made that can quickly become overwhelming and potentially drop through the cracks. Designers help guide you through projects, keeping them timely, on budget, and minimizing the risk of mistakes.

Myth:

Designers don’t need to be involved in construction.

Truth:

The earlier a designer is brought on - the better. We are equipped with the knowledge to manage your budget, space plan, create lighting plans and schedules, make functional installation decisions - and we're just getting started.

My Thoughts:

Of course I love adding those pretty final touches, but there's a lot that needs to happen between "let's build an addition" to fluffing that last pillow. When we are involved in a project from the beginning, we use our expertise to help guide your decisions. We thoughtfully design your space to be functional and achieve your goals. The last thing you want is to move into your brand new bedroom and be frustrated there's nowhere to plug your phone in once you're in bed.

Myth:

Everything a designer picks out is pricey.

Truth:

Designers have a wide variety of sources to select from. I have also been known to find the perfect piece for a client from Facebook Marketplace.

My Thoughts:

Designers have access to numerous venders that range in price points. We pick what fits your space, style, function, and budget. I may convince you to splurge on a star piece here and there, but I always include vintage finds to bring in some character, save money, and be sustainable!

Myth:

Designers don’t care about being practical.

Truth:

The very first step in my design process is a thorough questionnaire so that everything we design is not only beautiful, but functional for you and your lifestyle, inclusive of your kids and pets.

My Thoughts:

Real talk, what's the point of your home looking like a magazine spread if you can't touch or sit on anything?! Hello, performance fabrics! That's just one of many design choices. My questionnaire checks all the boxes to get to know you and your family. Of course my designs will be gorgeous to look at, but they will also work for your daily lives.

I could go on and on but I think that's plenty for today. What are some interior design myths you want debunked?
